About unlock pdf
This tool removes a password from a PDF you can already open. It is not a cracker and it will not recover a password you have lost — if you cannot open the file, this cannot open it either. What it does is take a document you have legitimate access to and produce a copy without the prompt, which is what you want when a file you receive monthly asks for the same password every single time.
The privacy case here is stronger than for any other tool on this site, and it is worth being blunt about why. Every online unlock service asks you to upload two things: an encrypted document and the password that decrypts it. That is the entire secret, handed over together, for a file that was encrypted specifically because it was sensitive. Payslips, bank statements, tax documents, and medical letters are the files people most often need to unlock, and they are exactly the files that should not be uploaded anywhere.
Here, decryption happens in the tab. The password you type is passed to pdf-lib in memory, used to decrypt the document, and never written anywhere or transmitted. When the tab closes it is gone. You can verify the absence of any upload the same way you would for any other tool on the site — open the Network tab and watch nothing happen.
PDFs carry two kinds of protection and they behave differently. A user password stops the file opening at all, and you need it to proceed. An owner password leaves the file readable but nominally restricts printing, copying, or editing — those restrictions are advisory flags that most software respects by convention, and removing them requires no password. If your file opens fine but will not let you print or copy, that is an owner restriction and this tool clears it directly.

Can this recover a password I have forgotten?
No. This is not a password cracker. If you cannot open the document, this tool cannot open it either. You need the password to remove the password.
My PDF opens but I cannot print or copy from it. Can you fix that?
Yes. That is an owner restriction rather than a user password, and clearing it does not require any password at all. Drop the file and save the unlocked copy.
Is it safe to type my password here?
It is used in this tab and discarded. It is not stored, logged, or transmitted, and there is no server to receive it. That is precisely why unlocking in the browser is worth doing rather than uploading to a service.
Is removing a PDF password legal?
Removing protection from your own documents, or documents you are authorised to access, is ordinarily fine. Circumventing protection on material you have no right to access is not. This tool requires the password anyway, so it does not enable the latter.
Does unlocking change the document?
It depends which protection you had. Clearing owner restrictions is lossless — the pages are copied intact and text stays selectable. Removing a user password requires decrypting and rebuilding the pages as images, so the text layer does not survive that path. The tool tells you which one applies before you run it.
What about PDFs protected with a certificate?
Certificate-based encryption is not supported. This tool handles standard password encryption only.
