About png to pdf

PNG is the format of screenshots, exported diagrams, charts, and anything with flat colour and hard edges. Those are exactly the things that get collected into documents — a bug report with annotated screenshots, a design review with exported frames, a set of charts pulled out of a dashboard for a board pack. Converting them to PDF is what makes them a single reviewable artefact rather than a folder.

Because PNG is lossless, the pages come out crisp. Text in a screenshot stays sharp, lines in a diagram stay clean, and there is none of the soft haloing that appears when the same content passes through JPEG. The tool preserves that by embedding the images without a lossy re-encode. The trade is size: a PDF built from PNGs is larger than the same document built from JPEGs, sometimes several times larger.

Transparency needs a decision, and the tool makes it explicitly rather than silently. PDF pages have no alpha channel in the way a PNG does, so anything transparent has to be composited onto something. The default is white, which is what you want almost always — it matches the page and looks intentional. You can choose a different fill for cases where the graphic was designed against a dark background and would otherwise become unreadable.

Screenshots are usually wider than they are tall, which makes auto orientation the right default here more than for any other image type. A 1920 by 1080 screenshot fitted to a portrait A4 page ends up occupying the middle third of it with white space above and below. With auto orientation, it gets a landscape page and fills it. If the document is going to be printed and bound, forcing a single orientation is worth the wasted space for the sake of consistency.

Does PNG to PDF lose quality?

No. PNG images are embedded without a lossy re-encode, so screenshots and diagrams stay exactly as sharp as they were.

What happens to transparent areas?

They are composited onto a solid background, since PDF pages have no alpha channel. White is the default; you can pick another colour if the graphic was designed for a dark background.

Why is my PDF larger than expected?

PNG is lossless, so it is bigger than JPEG to begin with, and that carries into the PDF. Run it through Compress PDF if it needs to be emailed.

Can I combine PNGs and JPGs in one PDF?
